These issues remain strong today, with the issues of healthcare reform and socialized medicine particularly dominating the debates. The Healthcare System in America The American healthcare system grew out of a series of historical accidents. Those who retire from the shipyard, are fired, cannot get hired, or end up permanently disabled all count on a combination of federal and state government agencies for help. Contrary to popular belief, those uninsured Americans do in fact receive medical care – but they get it only when their medical conditions have deteriorated to the point of crisis, at unnecessarily great expense to themselves, to taxpayers, and to their own already marginal personal solvency. For example, workers of many small companies are not provided healthcare benefits because their employers cannot afford healthcare insurance plans. Another issue related to the provision of healthcare by managed healthcare companies in the United States is accessibility, as those uninsured, minority groups, senior citizens, chronically ill, and low income Americans are often neglected regarding their healthcare. The reliance on employer-sponsored insurance has important implications for the efficiency and quality of healthcare in the United States. One of the many benefits of this kind of insurance is that the existence of a market for healthcare insurance, in which private insurers are vying for the business of private employers, results in innovation in insurance product development (Robinson, 2002, cited in Blumenthal, 2006). However, Blumenthal (2006) states that such innovations â€Å"have not proved to be sufficient to ameliorate our nation’s fundamental health care problems of cost, quality, and access to services† (p. 86). One of the major issues in the healthcare system in the United States is the employer abandonment of employee health benefits. At present, 60% of employees receive their health insurance through their employers (Bailey, 2006). However, since 2000 this rate has progressively slipped. It is feared that Young workers today will not receive employer-provided benefits that their parents or grandparents enjoyed. Employers usually justify their actions (or lack of actions) by stating that providing employee health benefits are very costly, which may eventually result in bankruptcy. According to Bailey (2006): â€Å"These companies, along with thousands of small employers, are simply reducing employee benefits, shifting more of the benefits costs to employees, or no longer providing benefits.† (p. 26) Indeed, participation in the employer-provided health care benefit plans is negligible. In 2005, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported that 47% of employees did not participate in such plans, and that among employees whose average wage was less than $15 per hour, only 39% participated in such plans.

The study was a longitudinal study but only followed up once after the initial results; I believe the study would have been more effective had it been followed up until at the least early childhood. In terms of diversity, I feel this study could have been greatly improved upon. Differences may or may not occur between different cultures and races, but the researchers chose not to delve into any demographic exploration on the topic. The socioeconomic status of the parents could also have an effect on how they were able to socialize their child. If the family was from the working-class, they may not have time to socialize their children as effectively. Many factors could have made this study more effective in determining the socialization of the child and the parents’ influences. Children also take after their parents behaviors. Eating habits in children may be partly due to genetic dispositions but are greatly impacted by their environment and the behaviors they are being taught. Birch and Fisher’s (1998) main concern in their study was that childhood obesity was not just simply linked to genetic factors but also environmental factors. The risk of a child becoming obese with two obese parents is very high, opposed to having non-obese parents. This is due to the child following the bad eating habits of the parents. Genes and environment are highly correlated because they are both typically provided by parents. Obese parents would need to acknowledge that there might be an issue and act on it accordingly and instill good eating habits to their children. The researchers of this study also chose not to cover any demographic characteristics such as age or socioeconomic factors. Many studies suggest that exposure to Bisphenol-A (BPA) during early development may cause memory inadequacy later in life. A study conducted by Luine, Eilam-Stock, Serrano & Frankfurt (2011), sought to investigate the effects of BPA on spatial and visual memory in adult rats. In their paper, they describe the influence of BPA on the brain areas that affect memory such as the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex. It is shown that estrogen and androgens play an important role in memory. But, BPA tends to inhibit estrogen increase in spine synapse formation as well as block androgens in spine synapses in the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex. This study was conducted to not only see the effects of spatial and visual memory, but also if the effects are linked to CA1 area of the hippocampus and the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC, since those specific areas of the brain are responsible for the memory function. The hypothesis for this study is that acute BPA exposure would harm memory in adult rats, decrease spine density in the hippocampus and mPFC, as well as inhibit the activity of memory association related proteins in those areas. Method The species that were involved were Male Sprague- Dawley rats, aged 60 days upon their arrival. Animals were kept in a 12 hour light-dark cycle, with two rats in each cage with access to unlimited food and water. Their memory abilities were evaluated using object recognition (OR) and object placement (OP) tasks. Both trials began with a sample trail (T1) where rats were in an open box with two similar objects and were allowed to explore them for 3 minutes. After an intertrial interval, the rat is returned to the box for 3 minutes (T2). In the OR task, one of the objects is replaced by a different object in T2. In the OP task, one of the objects is placed in a different location in T2. In both tasks, if the rat remembers the old object/placement, it will spend more time with the new one. But if the rat does not remember it, it will spend the same amount of time on both objects. On the 1st day of the test, after the rat completes T1, it is immediately injected with 4ug//kg of BPA. Two hours after, they do the T2. Procedure: Two experiments were performed. The first consisted of giving the rats a week of getting used to the housing environment, followed by two weeks of habituation to the OR and OP tasks as well as BPA injections. Four days after the OR test, the rats did the OP test. Eleven days after the last task, the rats did the T1 test again followed by an injection of BPA. The rats were immediately killed 40 minutes after the BPA injection. The brains were removed and assessed. In the second experiment, it consisted of the examining the effects of BPA by itself on the dendritic spine density. There was no OR or OP test given. I believed that sufficient controls were in place because for the 1st task, groups were switched in between so that the rats that did the OR test got BPA in the OP test and vice versa. Also the toys were replaced or switch in different positions to see if the rat would remember it.

For example, the truth is that my wife did all the sandwich preparations for me. Some hints in the sentence might tell your neurons the sentence is probably about sandwich ingredients rather than sandwich making, and you wont stay confused for long. But it requires a little thought to get to that point, and your neurons resent being made to think when its not necessary. Here is a parallel version of the same sentence: The sandwich was made from whole wheat bread, spread with mustard, and loaded with toasted cheese. Now your neurons can rest easy because the sentence structure is regular and predictable. Youre saying, This is true in the same way that is true. Not only this is true, but that is also true. This, that, and the other are true. Grant which is a sum of money granted to people who are needy should also be granted to the working class so they can easily survive in this world. The working class of this society may not be earning enough to live according to the standards thus they should be helped equally by the government. However in doing so the government should also take notice of the total earnings that a house gets in a month. Such action would allow the government to analyze as to if a family is in need of grants or not.
